Dyeing Your Hair Bold in Your 30’s and Why It’s A Good Idea

I’m turning 30 in a few months and maybe this is what is fuelling my desire to go absolutely buck wild by dyeing my hair bold colours. But is it too late?
I typed in a quick Google search to see what the internet thought and was faced with reasons why you shouldn’t. “The thirties are for finding your natural beauty”. But what’s so natural about being ~natural~.? What if my natural progression as an individual in this rapidly changing world is about sticking it to conceptualized notions of me. Maybe it’s time to absolutely blow the top off of my own restrictions as well as others?
I’ve always had the same medium-long blonde hair, lucky I know, I’ve heard many times before from hairdressers on why I shouldn’t be cutting or dyeing my hair. But as I near the limits of what society has deemed acceptable in self-expression – I feel as though I’ve been robbed of it!
Well no matter, I’m going to go my own way and here’s my justification on why we all can.
Expressing Your Individuality
As we enter our 30s, many of us find ourselves settling into a more stable and predictable routine. Maybe we have established careers, have started families, and are becoming more focused on our responsibilities. This doesn’t mean we have to conform to societal expectations though, or lose our sense of individuality.
With all the pressures and restrictions that can come with adulthood, what better way to break free from the constrains than by dyeing your hair bold! Is it hurting anyone? No! Are you risking your job? Maybe. (You can always turn a semi-permanent dye pastel by mixing it with any ol’ conditioner FYI)
Embracing Change and Adventure
Life is about change. And everyone currently alive on this planet is experiencing a parabolic increase in change. It’s a bit much sometimes. I’m still trying to wrap my head around the bitcoin fiasco, learning code, and grappling with the idea of AI. But I can wrap my head around the hair on it.
Dyeing your hair isn’t going to change the world like any of those things I mentioned. But if you’re like me, and find yourself just a little stuck in the mold, the routine, the cookie-cutter existence, dyeing your hair bold can provide a lot of change at a small cost!
Just the act of stepping out of your comfort zone can start the ball rolling for other adventures in change. An exciting way to shake things up and show the world that you are not afraid to take risks. Plus, it can be a great conversation starter and a way to connect with others who share your love for self-expression and adventure!
Boosting Confidence and Self-esteem
Changing your hair colour to something bold and vibrant can have a powerful impact on your confidence and self-esteem. Sure, it’s nerve racking and there is a chance you won’t like it, but it’s only hair! It will grow back. You can always dye it again and what’s not to like about trying something new? Even just experimenting with different hair colours can help you discover new aspects of your personality. You may find that a certain colour brings out your playful side, while another colour makes you feel more empowered and confident.
When you look in the mirror and see a reflection that truly represents who you are, it can be a powerful reminder of your own self-worth and individuality. Dyeing your hair bold allows you to stand out from the crowd and feel proud of your unique style.
“To be beautiful means to be yourself. You don’t need to be accepted by others. You need to accept yourself.”
Thich Nhat Hanh, Buddhist monk, author, peace activist
Just be you! On this beautiful Earth of shared cultures and life.
Breaking Societal Norms
We’ve all seen them, graced by the lovely humans in their later years that are actively defying their age. The brightness in their eyes inspiring me, their outfits, their hair, the way they talk. They’re rebellious in their nature.
We can kick-start that way of life by dyeing our hair! Why not? Let’s go for it!
Society often imposes certain expectations on how we should look and behave as we age. By dyeing our hair bold in our 30’s, you are definitely breaking free from these norms and challenging the idea that we have to conform to a certain image as we get older. Gross! It’s a small drop in the barrel, but one non-the-less. Lets be rebellious and reject the notion that age should dictate how we express ourselves.
By embracing our individuality and defying expectations, we are setting an example for others to do the same. You may inspire others to break free from the constraints of conformity and live life on their own terms. Better for all and all for the better.
To The Tub!
Don’t be afraid to take the plunge and show the world your true colours. If you’ve always wanted to try out something new, get to the department store / hair salon and pick out a colour. A little semi-permanent dye goes a long way. Dyeing your hair bold in your 30’s is not only a good idea, but also a transformative and empowering experience. We got this!
